Sanguine Temperament

The Sanguine is an extroverted, fun-loving, social person who is activity-prone, entertaining, persuasive, easily amused, and optimistic. People with a Sanguine temperament are receptive and open to others and build relationships quickly. They are animated, excited, and accepting of others. The Sanguine personality type is energized by being with or near someone else. They don’t need a reason to be around other people.

Sanguines will smile and talk easily and often. It is not unusual to feel as if you have known them for years after only a short while. The Sanguine temperament is so people-oriented that they easily forget about time and are often late arriving at their destination.

People who have a Sanguine temperament fear rejection or not making a favorable impression. They also fear others viewing them as unsuccessful.

The Sanguine is a “now, in the moment” person. They can get bored easily because of their orientation to social involvement, activity, and general dislike for solitude.

The attention span of the Sanguine personality is based on whether or not they are interested in the person or event. They can change their focus or interest in an instant. Sanguines are competitive and like to win. They usually like sports of any kind because of the activity and involvement with others. They are fun to be around and can be very entertaining.

Sanguine Personality Type

The Sanguine personality type is naturally people-oriented. Of the four primary temperaments (Choleric, Sanguine, Phlegmatic, and Melancholy), the Sanguine is by far the most versatile.

The Choleric, Phlegmatic, and Melancholy are all limited in what they can do, but the Sanguine is not. The Sanguine has the potential for the widest range of behavior due to possessing the widest range of emotions. This allows them to participate (based on their second temperament) in many different types of activity.

They often like to participate in, or change, their environment. The areas of business, politics, sports, and entertainment, to name a few, are dominated primarily by the Sanguine personality type.

Sanguine Temperament Combinations

A person’s behavior is always influenced by a combination of the four primary temperaments: Choleric, Sanguine, Phlegmatic, and Melancholy.

Although everyone has traits of all four temperaments, not all four are present with equal influence on behavior. It is the primary and secondary temperaments that create the greatest influence on a person’s normal, usual, and daily behavior.
